The large vessels are handbuilt using a combination of coiling and moulding techniques, from a mixture of stoneware and porcelain clays (in a ratio of 2:1). My current work is based around a theme of three organic shapes, which I start by forming the rounded bases and then continue to build up with coils. I burnish several times with large pebbles, and finish with a light polish. The vessels are then low-fired between 950ºC and 1000ºC, so that the walls remain porous.

I apply resists of course clay slip and string to some pieces, for others I rely purely on the intensity and direction of the smoke and flames. The smoke firing is carried out in garden incinerators using a mix of newspaper and garden cuttings. I will often re-fire several times to achieve the darker tones. Once cleaned, they are polished with beeswax.

The three vessel forms rely on an intuitive bond with the clay, and represent growth, both in terms of the physical growth of the individual pieces, and also my own journey, as these forms evolved. The smokey tones of the tall vessels progress from dark browns to white as they reach upwards, the dark rings suggesting a measure of age.

The strong forms ask to be stroked, turned, touched... Some of the vessels protect a ‘seed’ inside, which can be heard when picked up, as a reminder of the relation of the inside to the outside.
